Circular statistics

Separator : space(s)

This online tool calculates circular statistics for a dataset. The following elements are calculated : angular mean, resultant length, mean resultant length, angular variance and angular standard deviation.

Enter dataset numbers separated by a space.
The unit is the radian.

Definition of circular statistics

Circular statistics is a branch of statistics that deals in data with periodicity such as angles. In the case of angular data, the 0° and 360° measurements are equivalent, hence the need to use specific statistical tools.

Example: we consider the series of angles `{0,2pi}`
According to the classic approach to statistics, the average would be `\frac{0 + 2.pi}{2} = pi`. But, 0 and `2pi` represent the same angle which is 0°. The average should be equal to 0°, as confirmed by the tools of circular statistics.
