Determining Face Shape

What is a face shape?

Face shape refers to the silhouette or overall contour a face takes on when viewed head-on. It is defined based on the relative proportions of forehead width, cheekbones, jawline, and face length. Recognizing one's face shape can assist in selecting hairstyles, eyeglasses, or even makeup that will enhance distinctive features.

How to Take Measurements?

To accurately determine the shape of your face, it is essential to obtain precise measurements. Here's a step-by-step guide to get them:

1. Forehead Width: Measure the width of your forehead at its broadest point, typically between the top of your eyebrows and your hairline.

2. Cheekbone Width: Find the point just below the outer corner of each eye and measure the distance between these two points.

3. Jaw Width: Measure the width of your jaw at its widest point, usually at the height of the jaw joint, right before the ears.

4. Face Length: Use a tape measure to gauge the distance from the middle of your hairline down to the bottom of your chin.

As for the Chin Shape (angle), it is a visual estimation of how the chin appears. Here's how to classify it:

Soft: A rounded chin, without pronounced angles.
Medium: A slightly pointed chin, but not overly so.
Sharp: A very pointed chin, with a well-defined angle.

It's advised to use a mirror and check under various light sources to get a clear and accurate view when taking these measurements.

How is face shape determined?

Our algorithm employs a combination of measurements and comparisons to pinpoint the most likely face shape. Here's how each shape is identified:

  • Round: The face length is almost the same as the width of the cheekbones. Both the forehead and jawline are slightly narrower, with the overall shape being soft and rounded.
  • Diamond: Face length is the longest dimension. The cheekbones are the widest part, followed by the forehead and then the jawline.
  • Oblong: Face length is the prevailing measurement. The forehead, cheekbones, and jawline have almost identical widths, all of which are shorter than the face length.
  • Heart: Both the forehead and cheekbones have a similar width, with a significantly narrower jawline. The jawline tends to be pointed.
  • Oval: Face length is between 40% and 60% longer than the cheekbones. The forehead is broader than the jawline but narrower than the cheekbones. The overall silhouette is soft and rounded.
  • Square: All measurements (face length, forehead width, cheekbones width, and jawline width) are nearly the same. The face angles are pronounced and straight.
  • Triangle: The forehead is narrower compared to the cheekbones and jawline. The jawline is the broadest part of the face, giving the impression of a face narrowing upwards.

It's vital to understand that everyone is unique, and these categories are generalizations. Your face may exhibit features of multiple shapes. In such cases, the algorithm will return "Undetermined".

For the best results, ensure you take accurate measurements. Differences of a few centimeters can influence the outcome.
